An Olive Ash Reading Nook

WHR_Readathon-3142.jpg

An unusual request provided a starting point for this striking piece; make an office unit with drawers large enough to hold wrapping paper.

Wrapping paper aside, the clients - some-time home-workers – also wanted a comfortable place to work which also reflected their love of all things hand-made.

With specific dimensions to work from, designs were drawn up and the timber was chosen - a piece of Olive Ash with bold tones and a pretty, patterned grain.

At its base, the intricate grain of hand-picked Olive Ash was carefully positioned to give the drawers symmetry. The ornate recessed handles were an interpretation of an Arts and Crafts style elsewhere. Above, each shelf features built-in lighting to perfectly illuminate the clients’ books and objet d’art. There’s even a secret cubby hole, hidden by a discreet panel, for concealing those gifts so beautifully wrapped with paper from the wrapping drawer.

We didn’t want to use oak, or something that was the norm. We wanted to present something different.
